OSHA Issues Canadian Wildfire Smoke Guidance for Outdoor Workers

Resources provide health and safety information to reduce exposure to smoke.

The U.S. Department of Labor announced guidance from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regarding smoke from the ongoing Canadian fires for employers with outdoor workers. Air pollution in some parts of the U.S. may cause health risks due to exposure to smoke. OSHA has developed a website providing safety information and resources to help employers and workers minimize their exposure to smoke during wildfires.

“Wildfire smoke exposure can create major health hazards for outdoor workers. These hazards can be reduced with knowledge, safe work practices, and appropriate personal protective equipment,” said Assistant Secretary for Occupational Safety and Health Doug Parker. “I urge all employers to have plans and preparations in place to protect workers by preventing or minimizing exposure to hazardous air quality.”

The main risk from wildfire smoke is exposure to particulate matter, which may cause severe health issues like lung, heart, and kidney disease. Employers are advised to prepare and implement procedures to reduce smoke exposure, incorporate regular monitoring of air quality conditions available through the EPA, and relocate or reschedule work tasks.
